Sustainable and Renewable Wood Products Used

It is our intent to demonstrate the viability and beautiful variety of regional wood species as a renewable and sustainable building resource.  We will utilize the majority of the different species that grow on Green Woodlands property in construction of the Barn/House.  The timber frame will be cut on site with a portable saw mill, as will studs, joists, rafters, sheathing, flooring, structural decking, siding, interior paneling and cabinetry.  Virtually all of the wood products used in the construction of the barn/house will come from the property.

White Pine will be used for the majority of the timber frame post and beams as well as the outside wall sheeting.

Cherry will be used for some of the braces for the timber frame.  We are able to use a number of cherry trees that are not straight enough to be used as saw logs for boards but as “bent character” braces they look magnificent.  Cherry will also be used for one of the upstairs bedroom floors.

Spruce will be used for the inside ceiling of the roof structure and some of the subfloor structures.

Spruce and Pine will be used for dimensional lumber for 2x4’s and 2x6’s.

Yellow Birch will be used for the floor and ceiling of the 1st floor bedroom.

Sugar Maple will be used for an upstairs bedroom floor and kitchen cabinets.

White Ash will be used for the living, dining room and kitchen floors.

White Oak will be used to make pegs for the timber frame joinery.

White Birch will be used for the balcony floor.

Red Maple will be used for the underside of the balcony.

Beech will be used for shelving and for the outside overhang roof braces.

The stairs will feature fourteen different varieties of wood highlighted on the kick plate part of the stairs.  This will include Pine, Spruce, Hemlock, Tamarac, Yellow Birch, White Birch, Sugar Maple, Red Maple, White Ash, Beech, White Oak, Poplar, Basswood, and Apple.
