Wood Kiln Drying and Plaining
The large post and beam boards for the timber frame are used in what is called their "Green" state meaning they are cut and put up without drying. These large beams end up drying over many years. As part of this drying process they may develop surface cracks that are not usually structurally but can add character to the beams.

The finish wood for flooring, ceiling and cabinetry work need to be dried in a kiln and many times plained with some more exacting equipment than we have. We have been fortunate to find a couple of people who own a company very close to us called Kiln Works who really take a lot of pride in their work and their love for the natural beauty of wood certainly shows. Our pine softwood boards for the outside of the Barn House were taken to a kiln at Goss Lumber which specializes in drying sofwood.
