Durisol Foundation System
Durisol is the proprietary name for the Wall Form System we are using for the basement. It is a cement bonded wood fiber. They take wood from post-industrial sources such as truss manufacturers and planar shavings from mills (100% clean, natural recycled softwood). They use only clean un-used softwood lumber that is otherwise sent to the landfill. They do not use post-consumer waste such as pallets or demolition material. The wood is processed and then combined with standard Portland Cement and water to create the Durisol material.

The Durisol Wall Form System is the original insulated concrete forming system (ICF). It is the only ICF system that does not use foam or polystyrenes and is made from Durisol’s unique proprietary material.

During the processing step, the wood is chipped to specific gradation, the fine particles are removed, and the wood is mineralized. Mineralization is the proprietary process by which they remove the sugars from the wood and render the material completely inert, and no longer susceptible to rot or termite damage. The wood then becomes an inorganic aggregate similar to stone aggregate in concrete. Durisol is also known as “wood-concrete”. It is the mineralization process that allows the cement to hydrate or “strengthen” in the presence of wood particles.

The mineralization process is an interim process only and all Durisol products, once made, are comprised of cement and wood fiber only. There are no residual chemical properties whatsoever from the wood processing.

Hardened Durisol is lightweight, porous and very durable. It does not rot nor decay. It is vermin, termite and insect proof and does not support fungus growth. Durisol is environmentally safe, does not contain nor emit any toxic elements, and is fully recyclable. It contains no plastic, foams or polystyrenes.

The Durisol thermal Wall Forms incorporate mineral fiber (rockwool) insulation that is also non-combustible, moisture resistant and positioned towards the exterior of the wall, resulting in additional energy efficiency that is not possible with other insulated concrete forms.  With the insulation, the forms have an R-value between R-8 and R-20.

Since 1953, Durisol products have been integrated in every type of building application. The inherent insulation value, the 4 hour fire rating, the ease and speed of building and the moisture resistant capabilities make the system unmatched for most building projects.

Durisol will work with architects, contractors and homeowners to help create a building that is energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and built with green building practices. Their goal is always to recommend ways of using Durisol and other resources at hand more efficiently, effectively and economically.
